Denial-of-service (DoS) attack
A Denial-of-service (DoS) attack is a system-on-system attack. A Denial-of-service cyber attack inundates the endpoint with excessive traffic or resource requests, the result of this renders the endpoint unusable to the user.
Security perimeters are often not breached with a DoS attack, so conventional security software may not detect such an attack.
The well-known Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks involve botnets with overwhelming the business network with data and requests, rendering normal use of systems impossible. DDoS attacks are usually stopped at service providers or network level. DoS attacks usually last a short space of time and are not permanent.
However these types of attacks can render the EndPoint unusable for the duration of the attack.
A DoS attack usually involves a single system attacking another system. These types of attacks are difficult to monitor when remote workers are using a machine at home, outside of the businesses.
